About · The Brewdown
Straight talk on what home coffee actually costs
The Brewdown helps cost-conscious households compare the total cost of brewing at home across pods, bean-to-cup, bulk brew, and manual espresso. No jargon, no hobbyist rabbit holes: just numbers you can adjust to match your habits.
How estimates work
Each comparison line adds three parts: an upfront machine cost on day one, ongoing home brewing (ingredients at your cups-per-day rate), and that method's expected coffee shop spending. We do not spread machine cost across years; a $800 bean-to-cup machine shows up as $800 at the start of the chart, not amortized over time.
The cumulative cost chart spans 60 months internally. That horizon is a modeling choice for the calculator, not a promise about how long your gear will last. Results update live as you change inputs; everything runs in your browser with no account and no data sent to our servers.
- Included: machine upfront cost, home ingredients (beans, grounds, or pods), and per-method café visits at your shop drink price.
- Excluded: electricity, water, milk, syrups, tips, labor, and the time you spend brewing.
Fewer café visits matter
Better home setups often mean fewer trips to the coffee shop. Each method carries its own default shop drink frequency: bean-to-cup assumes fewer residual café visits than pods, for example. That difference shows up in the breakdown and can steepen long-term savings beyond cheaper per-cup home brewing alone.
Defaults are starting points based on typical habits, not predictions about your life. Adjust coffee shop drinks per method to reflect how you actually buy coffee away from home.
Default dollar amounts
Example machine and ingredient prices come from publicly listed retail ranges and illustrative research. They are meant for comparison, not as quotes for a specific product. Example drinks are based on the classic 6oz cup. Espresso machine samples are based on cappuccino at the midpoint of a popular 18g double and classic 9g single shot. Override any field with prices from your cart, local shops, or recent purchases.
Illustrative only
The Brewdown provides illustrative cost estimates only. It is not financial, tax, or investment advice. Actual costs depend on the products you buy, how often you brew, and local prices. Use the calculator to explore scenarios, not as a sole basis for purchasing decisions.
